Food tastes. Tannaumirk eats only ugrug (bearded seal) when both it and bear (barren ground) are cooked. He says it does not taste so very bad, but he can’t stand the smell. Old John, a German sailor with most of such men’s food prejudices, says it is the “best meat in the Arctic” for it “tastes and looks just like pork.” He does not like caribou, saying it is “watery” and prefers salt beef every day to deer meat even once a week for a change. All of us here prefer bear to ugrug except Tanaumirk. This is the first barren ground bear he has eaten, except some tainted and moldy bear meat he ate and liked at Langton Bay in January.
