The good humor of all these people is wonderful. Even when sick they joke. [] Some have what might be called solemn or austere faces [] but even they laugh at almost everything anyone says. When they are wet and cold they joke about it - though they seem to feel the discomfort about as whites do - and when there is nothing to eat they joke about that. When they have been fooled in a trade (as into buying Capt. McKennes’ bad flour at double prices) that is a joke, also when an Indian (Paul) shot Roxy’s dog []. When Paul brought him a dog to pay for the one killed he was surprised [].
